Letter 2 on fear of the future, in Hannah’s voice

This is one of the seven letters of the week on “Afraid of what’s next”, one of the topics a reader picks in Daily Bible Letters for Women. It is in Hannah’s voice, one of the two voices a reader can choose. It was written ahead of time with AI, around one Scripture passage quoted word for word from the World English Bible.

Dear friend,

Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1 (World English Bible)

I sat in my car for ten minutes last week before a doctor's appointment that turned out to be nothing. Ten minutes, running through versions of a conversation that never happened. I do this. I build the whole bad scenario, live in it, exhaust myself, and then reality shows up smaller and quieter than the thing I made.

We keep circling this, you and I, being afraid of what's next. Today I keep thinking about Proverbs 27:1, the part about not boasting about tomorrow because we don't know what a day will bring. I used to read that as a warning against arrogance. Now I read it differently. It's almost permission. None of us actually knows. Not the ones who seem calm, not the ones with plans in binders. The verse isn't scolding anyone for hoping. It's just naming something true, that the day ahead is not ours to hold yet.

I don't think that erases the fear. Mine didn't disappear in that parking lot. But it loosened its grip a little, knowing I wasn't supposed to have already solved tomorrow. What's the version of tomorrow your mind keeps rehearsing?

A prayer

God, she is carrying tomorrow before it has even arrived. Please meet her in the not-knowing. Steady what feels shaky, and be present in whatever the day actually brings her. Amen.
