Letter 2 on gratitude, in Hannah’s voice

This is one of the seven letters of the week on “Feeling grateful”, one of the topics a reader picks in Daily Bible Letters for Women. It is in Hannah’s voice, one of the two voices a reader can choose. It was written ahead of time with AI, around one Scripture passage quoted word for word from the World English Bible.

Dear friend,

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, for his loving kindness endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his loving kindness endures forever;

Psalms 136:1-3 (World English Bible)

So I caught myself yesterday actually finishing a thank-you before my brain jumped to the next worry. Small thing. Felt strange, like a muscle I forgot I had.

Here is the angle I keep circling. Gratitude for me used to mean listing the big obvious things, health, marriage, the kid who finally sleeps. But this week I noticed how it works different when it is small and specific. Not I am grateful for my life. More like, I am grateful the dishwasher held out one more load.

Psalm 136 has that repeated line, His steadfast love endures forever, over and over, after every single thing listed. Waters, kings, bread, even enemies handled. Same line every time. I used to think that was repetitive writing. Now I think it is someone training their own attention. Naming the specific thing, then naming the constant underneath it. Twenty-six times. That is not a mood. That is a practice.

What is the specific small thing you have caught yourself actually noticing lately?

A prayer

God, thank You for the steady thing underneath every small good moment she has named this week. Keep sharpening her eyes for what is actually in front of her. Amen.
