A letter on a struggling marriage

This is the first letter of the week on “Struggling in my marriage”, one of the topics a reader picks in Daily Bible Letters for Women. It is in Hannah’s voice, one of the two voices a reader can choose. It was written ahead of time with AI, around one Scripture passage quoted word for word from the World English Bible.

Dear friend,

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (World English Bible)

I'm not going to pretend I have this figured out. Year two of my marriage, I used to sit in the car in our own driveway for ten minutes before going inside. Not because anything dramatic happened. Just because I didn't know how to walk through that door and be honest about how hard it had gotten. I told people we were adjusting. We were not adjusting. We were two people who loved each other and were bad at almost everything else.

I'm not saying that's your situation. I don't know the shape of yours. I only know struggling in a marriage is one of those things people say in five words that actually means a hundred small daily griefs, and most of them don't have a tidy name.

There's a line in Ecclesiastes about two being better than one because of what happens when one falls. I keep sitting with the falling part more than the together part this week. It assumes falling. It doesn't pretend the road is smooth.

I'm not asking you to explain it all tonight. What does today actually feel like, underneath the word struggling?

A prayer

God, You know exactly what's heavy in this marriage tonight, even the parts she can't put into words yet. Stay close to her in the driveway moments. Don't let her carry this alone. Amen.
