Letter 2 on losing your job, in Hannah’s voice

This is one of the seven letters of the week on “Out of work”, one of the topics a reader picks in Daily Bible Letters for Women. It is in Hannah’s voice, one of the two voices a reader can choose. It was written ahead of time with AI, around one Scripture passage quoted word for word from the World English Bible.

Dear friend,

It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (World English Bible)

Okay. So I keep thinking about the actual hours of it. Not the big fear, the small ones. I was out of work for four months before I got hired at the hospital, and the worst part was never the applying. It was 2pm on a Tuesday with nothing on the calendar and the strange guilt of resting when I hadn't earned anything that day. I used to shower late just to have something to mark the time by. Nobody warns you how much of it is just hours.

I had Lamentations 3 open this week, the part about His mercies being new every morning. I used to read that as a nice line for hard times. Now I think it's specifically for people whose days have gone shapeless, who can't point to what the morning is for anymore. New doesn't mean easy. It means today isn't yesterday's leftovers.

What does 2pm actually look like for you these days?

A prayer

God, the hours are long and the waiting has no shape yet. Meet her in the shapeless middle of the day. Let today feel like its own morning, not a repeat. Amen.
